Former Offaly minor football manager Phil O'Reilly has turned down the opportunity to manage a number of clubs in the county and will instead manage Westmeath senior team The Downs.

O'Reilly is highly regarded in Offaly GAA as a player and a coach and managed Tullamore to their last senior football championship success in 2007.

He had run for the position of Offaly under-21 manager, but was overlooked by the selection committee in favour of Gracefield's Martin Murphy.

Last year The Downs reached the semi final of the senior football championship where they were beaten by Mullingar Shamrocks and the club will hope that O'Reilly can guide them that step further. Tweet
