Burke calls time on Loman's reign

August 20, 2010
Wally Burke has brought the curtain down on his three-year reign as St. Loman's manager after steering the Mullingar outfit to safety with victory over Coralstown/Kinnegad last weekend.

Last year's beaten county finalists emerged as 0-11 to 0-8 winners at Cusack Park and thus avoided a SFC relegation playoff.

Burke, who made his name in management with Roscommon outfit St. Faithleach's, said: "Three years is a long time on the road. We reached a county semi-final, a county final and won a Feis Cup. They're a very young team and a break will do them no harm.

"My term is finished with them now, they'll have a new man in charge, a bit of freshness, and good luck to them in the future."

Coralstown/Kinnegad now face a battle for survival against St. Malachy's, who are managed by none other than former Kinnegad player, manager and secretary Joe Giles. Giles, who captained the Reds to their last Flanagan Cup success in 1996, will be without dual star, Ronan Whelan, who fractured his jaw in St. Malachy's heavy defeat to The Downs last Sunday.
