St Marys Notes
August 16, 2010
Intermediate Football Championship Rd 5.
St Marys played C/F/C/W in Kinnegad on Saturday 14th August in the final game of the group stages. Following on from the fiasco against Ballinagore, this St Marys team was like a wounded animal going into this match. St Marys Scored the fist 2 points of the match with a free from Eoin Gorman and a point from Alan Gavin. Finea pulled one back before Gorman struck with another free. Exchanges were very tight and scores hard to come by, but Finea got the next 3 points to lead by one. Another Gorman free and a fine point from Ian Cunningham finished the scoring for the first half.
Half time score; St Marys 0-5, Finea 0-4.
St Marys again got off to a good start in the second half with a fine point from Colin Gavin . Then in the best move of the match Robbie Kenny smashed the ball to the roof of the Finea net to leave St Marys 5 points in front. Finea brought it back to a 3 point game with 2 points before Gorman nicked another point. Then a run of 4 points from Finea tied up the match and it was anyone's game. St Marys managed to get their act together and points from Gorman, Joe Bradley and substitute John McNamara gave St Marys a 3 point cushion which they defended with their lives. A last gasp point from Finea was the final score as St Marys held out to win by 2 points.
St Marys finished level on points with Rosemount but failed to qualify for the play-offs on score difference. However if they had shown the same spirit and determination in other games as they did in this one , they would now be looking at a play off place.
Final score; St Marys 1-10, C/F/C/W 0-11.
Team; Austin Bradley, Thomas Giles, David Mitchell, Adam Nolan, Paul Carey, Michael Geraghty, Aidan Fallon, Colin Gavin(0-1), Damien Gavin, Eoin Gorman(0-5), Joe Bradley(0-1), Damien Healy, Robbie Kenny(1-0), Alan Gavin(1-0), Ian Cunningham(0-1), John McNamara(0-1).
Junior B Championship
St Marys played their first game in this competition in Moate last Saturday 7th August. Unfortunately for St Marys this proved to be a game to forget as they suffered a 7 point defeat against the hosts. Despite a bright start St Marys quickly found themselves behind and struggled to match the scoring of a clinical Moate side. St Marys wasted chance after chance and found themselves trailing 10 - 05 at half time.
John McNamara goaled soon after the restart but Moate continued to apply the pressure and ran out convincing 7 point winners in the second half.
Final score Moate 0-17 St Marys 1-07

U-10
The u-10 panel had a busy week playing two challenge games in the space of three days. First up was Milltownpass. Here St Marys produced a great display to run out easy winners in what had been a close game up until half time. The second game saw a tight and exciting encounter end in a deserved draw against Multyfanham. This game was an excellent example of how to block down you opponent and credit must go to both teams for superbly executing this skill. But remember, practise makes perfect!
U12 League
Millmore Gaels were the visitors to Rochfortbridge on Wednesday 11th August to play St Marys in a top-of-the-table clash. With both teams on full points , this was sure to be a close match and so it turned out. Two more Millmore Gael points were cancelled out by a point apiece from midfielders Sean Lyster and Francis Duffy. Millmore gaels refused to die and notched a goal and a point before Pauli Carpenter closed out the half with a point
Half time Score; St Marys 2-05, Millmore Gaels 1-05.
On the resumption points from Lyster and Carpenter pushed St Marys further ahead but a goal from Millmore brought it back to 2 points. A run of 5 points to 2 in favour of St Marys finished out the scoring, with the points coming from Matthew Rowden(2), Sean Lyster(2), and a superb effort from Anthony Brady.
