Deadline looms for Westmeath nominations

Westmeath football manager Pat Flanagan
Westmeath clubs have until this Saturday, August 14, to submit nominations for the vacant senior football manager's post.

Offaly man Pat Flanagan was appointed as interim manager for the duration of Westmeath's championship involvement last April and, according to football board chairman Des Maguire is "very interested" in taking on the job on a full-time basis.

Flanagan guided the Lake County to a Leinster SFC quarter-final victory over Wicklow just six weeks after replacing the ousted Brendan Hackett, but disappointing performances against Louth in the Leinster semi-final and Derry in the All-Ireland qualifiers could scupper his hopes of continuing in the role.

Flanagan could also face competition from Dessie Dolan Snr, who was controversially overlooked when the job went to surprise packet Hackett this time last year.

Clubs have been instructed to only nominate candidates who have confirmed they are interested in the post. Westmeath officials hope to have a new manager in place for the knockout stages of the local championships later this month.

"We'll come back as soon as we can with a name. We would hope to have somebody by the end of the month," Maguire added.

Meanwhile, Westmeath are hoping to keep Kevin Martin on as hurling manager after he guided the Lake County to their third Christy Ring Cup success last month.

Westmeath have been promoted to next year's Liam McCarthy Cup as a result.
