Westmeath G A A Notes By Pat Reilly Westmeath PRO:
GREVILLE ARMS SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP:
The third round of this year's senior hurling championship took place last weekend and as the result show a number of prominent clubs in the winners group find themselves under pressure for the final spots in this competition most notably Lough Lene Gaels and Castlepollard, while in the losers group Raharney have secured the first semi-final spot by topping the table with Brownstown and last years Intermediate winners St. Brigid's being relegated back to Intermediate. (see tables below)
JUNIOR A CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL:
The final of this year's junior championship took place last Friday evening in Robbinstown with Lough Lene Gaels facing up to Raharney who they had already beaten earlier this year. This was a lively match with Raharney winning out in the end, the Gaels will probably feel they were in with a good shout but missed chances in the first period cost them dearly. Raharney came into the game in the second half and a fine display of point taking from Joey Boyle helped them to victory.

SUDDEN ADULT DEATH SYNDROME- SCREENING:
CRCni, Cardio-Respiratory Care N.I. wish to bring to your attention a service that has been successful in a number of sports clubs in the Province. The service which allows for Cardiac and Respiratory screening tests to be carried out, at the club venue*, and for the small fee of £35 per person is available to your members.
Cardio-pulmonary screening is used to establish cardiac and respiratory fitness to undertake sports. A number of sudden deaths amongst young people have occurred in recent years and parents and sports clubs are understandably concerned. The department of health has in the past given a directive that screening is not necessary as there is "no consistent link between physical exertion and sudden cardiac death". Doctors agree that NO diagnostic test can give 100% reassurance that Sudden Adult Death Syndrome will not strike, ECG however, can and DOES significantly reduce the risk. This test, along with tests of lung function, if appropriate, alerts professionals and allows other specific tests to be carried out. In Italy, every child has an ECG before being allowed to participate in competitive sport. Our experience has shown that we ARE able to detect cardiac abnormalities at an early stage. CRCNI are willing to provide these two basic tests. Both results will be offered to the GP for inclusion in the individuals' medical records. The GP would then be in a position to follow up with those tests that he believes are appropriate. Alternatively these can be arranged on a private healthcare basis. These tests will be carried out by qualified clinical physiologists and reports are provided. Nobody can give you absolute assurance about your child's health or any adult participating in sport, but this simple procedure will certainly help to give you the reassurance you need. To arrange test please contact Barbara Martin 07817850321 Or Rosie Spence 07715990314
