Killucan club notes

July 19, 2010
On Sunday evening last, our lads faced last years County Finalists, St Lomans, in the 3rd round of the Senior football Championship.
Killucan got off to a great start, scoring two very well taken points, before a Paul Greville goal put us 1-02 to 0-00 in the lead after just seven minutes. The Mullingar outfit put themselves back in contentention with two points before Killucan pulled away slightly again with two more points. It was point for point for the remainder of the half until St Lomans scored the last two points of the half to leave Killucan leading 1-06 to 0-06 at half time.
In the second half, Killucan settled the quicker of the two teams with a further two points to stretch their lead to 5 points again and it looked as if Killucan might run out easy winners before St Lomans recorded their 1st score of the half with a very good point from a tight angle. Killucan responded with what proved to be their last score of the match to again leave 5 points between the sides with 20 minutes remaining. This 5 point gap would prove crucial as the Mullingar men went in search of the scores to put themselves back in contention. Two more points by St Lomans left three points between the sides with 12 minutes remaining. This was to be the final score of the game and Killucan spent the remainder of the game in the trenches, warding off attack after attack by "The Lomans" in what was an intense finish to the game. Killucan were fortunate that numerous frees from very scorable positions all drifted to the right of Dáithí Bryans post in the final minutes to give the Saffrons and very hard earned, but thouroughly deserved victory over a side that much was expected of at the start of the campaign
Team; D. Bryan, J. Greville, F. Boyle, Anthony Doyle, C. Leech, J. Shaw, M. Dunne, P. Leavy, C. Jordan, R. O'Reilly, J. Nugent, C. Boyle, Alan Doyle, P. Greville and B. Nea. Subs uased; C. Cannon for Nea, P. Briody for Alan Doyle and N. Flanagan for Leech.
Thats two wins on the trot for Killucan now and while we might have been content with a quarter-final spot at the start of the campaign, a Semi-final should now realistically be our target with two games remaining. Next up is Maryland, our victors twelve months ago, who are also going well in this years campaign. A win in this fixture would virtually seal that semi-final spot for us. Training continues this Wednesday and Friday at 7;30.
