"Lord of the Ring" is a Knockout. Plunketts big fight night finally arrived on Saturday as months of hard work and effort finally paid off in what turned out to be a great night for the town and a massive one for the club. 20 contestants took to the ring in 10 seperate fights during an entertaining, enthralling and fun filled evening. There was plenty of thrills and spills to entertain the crowd. Ciaran McKenna got the spines tingling as he expertly worked his musical & lighting magic in getting the gig well and truly underway. MC Paul Doolin took to the canvas and as always was a crowd favourite as he interviewed the boxers and kept the show moving. Scattered around the building were lots of Plunketts volunteers who worked hard as lighting & sound techs, bell ringers, time keepers, ticket & programme sellers, doormen, ushers & bookies. There was some time then for punters to have a little flutter before the first fight took place. Everybody watched & waited in anticipation as the Terry "the Greatest" Gavin and Eddie "The Hurricane" Moore took the long walk with the traditional boxing spotlight and the 1500 strong crowd fixing their full attention them, as their theme tunes blasted out. Through the night, there were wins for Eddie Moore, Kyle Maguire, John Shaw, Barry Kennedy and Keith Shanley. A great fight was had between Kenny Hanlon & Johnny Corocoran which had drama when "the Stallion" fell through the ropes and had to be caught by the judges and punters. Tony Gavin looked to be having the upper hand over his opponent Keith Moore before his knee gave in to give Moore the win. Arguably the best fight of the evening was the girls match in which Pamela Greville from Raharney narrowly defeated Christina Gahan in what as an enthralling contest between two fearless competitors. But probably the most entertaining fight was between Micky Wallace and Noel Dunne. The crowd finally got to see a knockout as poor Noel hit the canvas. But in good natured spirt and a sporting manner, the crowd got behind "the wipeout" to encourage him back into the match. The final bout of the night was between Kieran "The Mauler" Smith and David "Macho" Mitchell. It rounded off a hugely successful night with plenty more music and entertainment into the early hours. The one pity was that Noel "Knockout" Nugent didn't get his fight. Full credit for him for training with the lads and being on standby. We know he was disappointed, but there will always be next year! A big highlight of the evening were the beautiful card girls who were very well turned out. It looks like there may be a few future models in the making. It was great to see Michaela Quinn & Rachel Heffernan who are from well known Plunketts families taking part. The club wishes thank all the boxers, who were brave enough to partake in the event in the first place, the coach David Fitzpatrick who prepared the boxers so professionaly, all the club organisers and volunteers for the time and effort that was put into organising the event, Paul Doolin MC, our guest referees & ringside judges, the Mullingar Park hotel, the local media, the card girls, doctors and medical staff on standby sponsors and all the people in Mullingar and from other clubs around the county who bought tickets and supported and attended the event. If there's anyone who we left out, don't be offended - there was a big list! Finally credit must go to Dermot Curley, Ciaran McKenna & Conleth McCormack who put so much time and effort into organising and orchestrating the event behind the scenes to make it happen. Already people are talking about 2011!
U12 Indoor League The U12 indoor league continues at 4pm on Saturdays in St Mary's CBS gym - all newcomers are welcome. This week Galway got their first win under their belt by defeating Clare 4-3, as they welcomed Ross Corroon into the side for his first start. Daniel Bolger who was on loan from Kilkenny netted the winner in the final minute of the game. There was a huge display from Aidan Keena as well after he netted a batch of goals as Tipp beat Kilkenny. Tipperary's two wins moves them 2 points clear at the top of the table, while Galways win moves them off the bottom. Qualifying positions are still up for grabs for all 4 teams.
