Leinster Colleges SFC 'A' roundup
January 21, 2010
St. Pat's, St. Benildus, Ard Scoil na Trionoide and Colaiste Eoin all enjoyed victories in yesterday's Leinster Colleges SFC 'A' second round action.
In the big game of the day at Dr Cullen Park, Colm O'Rourke's St. Pat's, Navan defeated last year's beaten finalists Good Counsel, New Ross by 2-11 to 1-11. In what was a cracking contest, a fourth minute goal from Fiachra McEntee set the winners on their way and a second major from Shane Gillespie had them ahead by 2-3 to 0-5 at the break.
A superb Donagh Doyle goal 10 minutes after the restart brought Good Counsel to within a point, 1-8 to 2-6, but three-time Hogan Cup champions Pat's held on for the win.
St. Benildus from Kilmucud also qualified for the quarter-finals following a 1-13 to 1-7 victory over Patrician, Newbridge at Belfield. With midfielder Peter O'Grady and corner forward Glen Whelan to the fore, the winners had built up a 0-9 to 0-2 lead by the 25th minute. But a Dan Nay goal helped reduce the deficit to just three points, 1-4 to 0-10, at half-time.
However, the Dubliners put the issue beyond doubt after the restart when they scored 1-2 without reply, with Whelan accounting for the goal.
Also at Belfield, Colaiste Eoin proved too strong for Colaiste Iosagain of Portarlington, running out comfortable 2-12 to 2-4 winners. A second minute goal from Brian O Murchu propelled the Stillorgan side into an early six-point lead before a Rory Galvin handed the Laois school a lifeline. Colm MacGearailt (Colaiste Eoin) and Peter Cunningham (Colaiste Iosagain) also found the net in the first half, at the end of which the Dublin side led by four points.
However, they took a firm grip on proceedings in the second half to ease in the last eight.
In Athy, Kildare minor stars Cian Reynolds and Darroch Mulhall scored 2-7 between them as Ard Scoil na Trionoide defeated St. Declan's of Cabra by 2-13 to 1-11. The home side never looked in any danger after goals from Reynolds and Mulhall helped them to a commanding 2-6 to 0-2 interval lead.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, holders St. Mary's, Edenderry survived a missed penalty by Marist College, Athlone to win by 0-10 to 0-9 in Kiltoom.
