New Westmeath hurling manager Kevin Martin celebrates after scoring Tullamore's opening goal in the Offaly SHC final
New Westmeath hurling boss Kevin Martin will get a close look at some of his new charges when he lines out for Tullamore in Sunday's Leinster club hurling semi-final against Clonkill.
The 1994 and '98 Offaly All-Ireland winning wing back was recently installed as the Lake County's new manager after guiding Tullamore to their first Offaly SHC title since 1964 last month. The player-manager will line out at full forward in Cusack Park on Sunday when he will have a unique chance to get to know at least half a dozen of the men that will make up his Westmeath panel in 2010.
"I had a meeting with the lads (last weekend in Kinnegad) and I said to the Clonkill fellas that if they didn't let me score two goals, they'd be gone! We had a good laugh about it," Martin told the Irish Daily Star.
"The Westmeath board contacted me about the job before the county final. I told them that I wouldn't be able to talk to them until afterwards. I had been waiting for this for 20 years.
"There are plenty of good hurlers in the county so it's a question of getting everyone committed to it."
