Flanagan appointed Westmeath selector

Westmeath football manager Tomas O Flatharta has pulled off a major coup by adding Pat Flanagan to his backroom team.
The Clara native, who lost out to Richie Connor for the Offaly manager's job last month, has been appointed a selector along with the outgoing Paul Conway in the new management set-up. Flanagan is one of the most highly-regarded coaches in the midlands, having guided Tyrrellspass to back-to-back Westmeath SFC wins in 2006 and 2007, as well as a Leinster club final appearance last year. He also led Clara to an Offaly SFC title success earlier this decade.
Flanagan takes over from Eamonn Gallagher, who was recently appointed Westmeath hurling manager in succession to Johnny Dooley. O Flatharta has been given the option of appointing a third selector after Tommy Kelly also stepped down.
The Kerryman's reappointment as manager for a fourth year was confirmed at last night's football board meeting in Mullingar. He will also take charge of the under 21 side for a second year running.
Westmeath will open their O'Byrne Cup campaign against neighbours Meath on January 4 before switching their attention to the National League, where they will compete in Division 1 after winning Division 2 last season.
