Westmeath manager Jack Cooney has welcomed the extra games ahead of the start of the NFL.

Just like last year, the Lake County have reached the knockout stages of the O’Byrne Cup (they won it last year) as they face Offaly in the semi-final on Sunday.

Cooney told the Westmeath Independent that the extra games are invaluable at this time of the year as they allow the management team to run the rule over newcomers in competitive fare.

“We’re very mindful that we’re only three weeks away from the Clare game in the league and lads need to be getting plenty of game time,” said Cooney.

“You can’t beat game time. You can’t replicate it in training. Here is the best place to get it, even if the pitch was heavy on the legs. The lads will try and recover, and get another progressive week under their belts.”
