Senior Football Championship

Garrycastle 2-13 Athlone 0-7

A good start and a good finish led to a resounding win by Garrycastle in Tubberclair on Sunday evening last. Garrycastle who were without James Sheeran, Tom O'Halloran and Jonathan Maguire, had the benefit of the wind in the first half. The first five minutes of the game were scoreless but a point by Justin Barrett was the first of five in five minutes through Alex Gardiner , Conor Cosgrove (2) and Ger Henaghan. Athlone’s first point came after 13 minutes. A poor kickout led to a good goal chance for Athlone which they failed to convert. At this stage of the game, possession was fairly evenly shared with the Athlone defence tightening up considerably. At the other end the Garrycastle defence were being tested with Jack Donohoe in particular giving a great lesson in the art of defending. In addition he found time to get forward and score a point in the 24th minute. This was followed by points from Conor Cosgrove and Ger Heneghan to Athlone’s two to leave the halftime score at Garrycastle 0-8 to Athlone’s 0-3.

the resumption Athlone monopolised the possession but could only add two points to their total. An excellent save by Sean Brennan help to keep their score down. It was the 44th minute when Garrycastle got their first 2nd half score through an Alex Gardiner point, quickly followed by one from Michael Monaghan. After 53 minutes Athlone had the lead cut to three again when the late Garrycastle scoring spree started with three points on the trot between the 54 and 59th minutes through substitute Andrew Monaghan James Dolan and substitute Dessie Dolan. Mathew Guiheen had been pushing forward in the second half and on one such run he found himself one on one with the Athlone keeper and duly found the net. A late Garrycastle attack appeared to have been repelled but pressure on the defender resulted in the ball being crossed to Michael Monaghan who had the simplest of jobs in getting his side’s second goal. This finished the scoring with Garrycastle having the impressive total of ten different scorers.

This result leaves Garrycastle on top of the table with 8 points and one game v St Lomans to play which is fixed for Tubberclair on Sunday evening next at 7pm.

Under 14

Garrycastle 2-8 Tubberclair 4-6

Garrycastle u14 travelled to Tubberclair to play the third round of the division 2 championship.

With a few players missing due to holidays Garrycastle still had 17 players togged out in the red and green. As the game started there was a strong breeze favouring Tubberclair and this showed as the home team started the brighter and scored the first two points. Garrycastle adjusted well to the wind and started running at their opponents and were rewarded by numerous frees. We were unlucky not to convert a couple of frees close in and also had a few chances cleared off the Tubberclair line. Long balls from Tubberclair eventually broke our defence and the home team scored a goal and some poor decisions gave Tubberclair another two points. Our lads kept working and were rewarded by some fine runs from the backline and midfield scoring two points in concession which was keeping us in the game. A long range shot from Tubberclair hit the upright and the ball fell kindly into the forward who scored another goal. The Garrycastle lads never gave up and just before halftime were rewarded with a goal that left the score at Garrycastle 1-02 Tubberclair 2-04 with all to play for in the second half.

Tubberclair started the second half with a quick point and followed up with a goal. Garrycastle started to pass the ball around and when they got into a scoring position started to take their points. We had two penalties awarded to us but only converted one. Garrycastle were having a purple patch and started to kick over some fine points from play. A lapse in concentration allowed Tubberclair to pass the ball through our defence and they scored an easy goal. With minutes to go the Garrycastle players were searching for goals when pointing the ball may have been the better decision. Outscoring the home team in the second half was great but just not enough time left in the clock to get the win. Still lots to improve on but we are getting better with every performance. Thanks to all parents for their support. The final score was Garrycastle 2-08 Tubberclaire 4-06.
