U14s: Southern Gaels 3-9 v CTG 5-9

Southern Gaels took their under 14 promotion to Division 1 Championship hurling very serious and it couldn’t have come with a sterner challenge than the Division 1 League finalists CTG. Having won all their games in Division 2 League, the Gaels knew a step up was needed to take on the best of what Division 1 league contained. Having a few injured and on holidays was not to deter the South Westmeath men as they went out and battled bravely. They took the lead with 2 great points, only to be penned back by a goal from CTG. However, they kept winning their battles all over the field and deservedly regained the lead. It was a great open game of hurling, with some fabulous end to end hurling on display, with both sides going in level 1-7 apiece at half time. The game ebbed and flowed for the next 10 minutes, but 2 quick goals put CTG in the driving seat. The Gaels got 2 more goals back, but it was followed by 2 more from CTG which really made for a nail-biting finish, as both teams had enough chances and scoring power to find the net. However, time ran out for Southern Gaels and they lost by the 2 scores, which were magnificently saved by the CTG goalie. It was a great encounter for both teams as they both look to Tuesday for their respective League Finals. We wish them all well in their endeavours.

Church Gate Collection This Weekend

Southern Gaels will hold their annual church gate collection this weekend so if you get the chance to support the club please do so. The funds from this are essential in our plans to further develop the club. Hopefully we will have the U14 trophy to display as evidence of the great work that is been done!

Sonas Sponsor U16s Jersey

Sonas childcare and nursing home joined the list of business supporting the work of the club this week by sponsoring a new set of jerseys for our U16s who have had a very successful year so far under the watchful eyes of Tommy Murphy, Cormac Ó Súilleabháin and Enda Dowd sitting joint top of their division. The jerseys are a modern design with the club colours with the Sonas logo on the front. The jerseys were presented last Friday when a group from the childcare unit in Cloghanboy came to Páirc Chiaráin for some fun hurling activities. Members of our U16 team helped out and a great time was had by all with some excellent skills on display. Many thanks go to Sonas for their support – it means a lot to the club.
