ACFL Div.1 vs Shandonagh vs Rosemount (Sunday 10th March)
Conditions were very tough in this second round clash of the Westmeath ACFL Div 1 match between Shandonagh and Rosemount. A bright sunny morning with squally wind and heavy underfoot ground ensured those who didn't take heed would be punished by the elements. Those who dared to bounce the ball on the stand side of the pitch would be lucky to catch it with their ankles such was the softness of the ground in places.
Shandonagh were first on the score sheet with a fine point from play by Alan Hickey after 3 minutes. This was followed by 2 points from Rosemount before the home side again attacked and shook the back of the Shandonagh net. Rosemount continued on with this momentum sticking on 3 more points before Ciaran Shanley got a chance in the 24th minute to add a second point from play for Shandonagh. Shandonagh were struggling to get to grips with the conditions during this period with Rosemount looking the slightly fitter team and working harder for each other. It was evident that the home side also knew the lay of their home pitch very well as they coped better with the conditions preferring the toe-tap to the bounce which caught out Shandonagh more than it should have. The latter few minutes of the first half finished with Rosemount adding 2 more points to their score sheet and Tom Molloy converting a free for Shandonagh on the 29th minute.
Rosemount went in leading at half time on a score of 1:07 to Shandonagh's 0:3.
The second half was going to be tougher as the home side were playing with any help the wind was giving on this day. The score said it all with Shandonagh only registering 2 points
versus Rosemount's 1 goal and 5 points during this half. Despite the huge effort they put in this half, luck was not with them with several voyages towards goal just breaking down at the last minute or falling short. Tom Molloy got Shandonagh's 2 points from converted frees in the 10th and 27th minutes of the second half. Too many mistakes overall resulted in the men in blue putting themselves under needless pressure. The unwillingness to give up was very evident and this will be a match the Shandonagh men can look back on and learn plenty from going forward.
