Southern Gaels club notes

March 11, 2019

Congrats to Westmeath Senior Hurlers

History in the making, no doubt, and let’s hope it’s the beginning of a golden future of hurling in Westmeath – our hurlers are back in the top flight after 32 years in the wilderness! What a day of glory coming from a five-point deficit against a strong Kerry side to clinch the Division 2A title at the end of a terrific season of hurling. In years to come undoubtably the number that say they were there will greatly outnumber the amount that Cusack Park, Ennis can physically hold!

Southern Gaels have played no small part in the development of hurling in the county with our hurlers and mentors involved at every level promoting this ancient sport. Currently involved in mentoring are Martin Geary, Club Chairman, Tony O’Keeffe, Academy mentor, and Enda Dowd, Manager of the senior team. We also have over ten U17(Minor), U16 and U14 hurlers travelling throughout the county to train and play for Westmeath. No doubt many of these will soon count among the ranks of the senior panel to share in great days like Sunday. Gaels agus an Iarmhí Abú!

Registration Night Success

As always, the great and the good of the club turned out in droves for a very successful registration night last Friday. From 5.30pm on, the bar in Páirc Chiaráin was buzzing with chatter about the upcoming season and the glorious state of hurling in club, county and country at the moment. Thanks to all who made it a success by signing up for 2019 but also those who made coffee, sold gear, manned the laptops for our debut online registration and tidied after the job was done.

Online Gear Shop Launched

The big news from our registration night was the launch of our online gear shop hosted by Azzurri. Now members, and indeed non-members, can get their hands on some very stylish Southern Gaels tops, shorts and skinnies, among other items, by surfing to the Club Gear section of the Azzurri site, www.azzurri.ie. Check it out!

Support Southern Gaels

As we are in registration mode, we would like to invite all members to renew their membership by contacting any of the Southern Gaels committee and/or mentors. If you are a lapsed member feel free to take up social membership of the club for 25 euro or, better still, join the club draw for 120 euro annually or by direct debit for 10 a month. These funds are vital to the continued success of the club so please support us in our efforts.

Training Sessions

While we await the return of good hurling weather, training sessions continue in various locations over the week. The Academy (U6s) and the U8s train every Tuesday night from 6.30-7.30pm in the Marist Hall. U10s and U12s train every Sunday from 5-6pm at the Regional Sports Centre on the AstroTurf. The U14s and U16s are back to full pitch training as their seasons kick off in the next week or so. Our senior panel are back to full training every Saturday morning and their first League match is scheduled for next weekend – time yet to be decided. If you would like further details regarding our sessions please get in touch via Facebook.
