Scor na nOg finals

We may not have been among the winners, but we couldn't have been any more proud of our four acts in last Sunday's Scor na nOg finals at a packed Ballymore Community Centre.

First on stage for us was Thomas Wrafter in the Solo Singing. Thomas gave a great rendition of 'My Four Green Fields' and scored very highly, but was pipped at the post by Ballinagore's Gemma Seery.

Next up was Grace McNamee in the Recitation. Representing Kilbeggan ladies, Grace's take on Percy French's 'If I were a Lady' was hugely enjoyable, but it was Emily Shaw from The Downs who got the nod from the judges.

Our brilliant Ballad Group comprising Tadhg McNamee, Lisa Coffey, John Teehan, Conor Wrafter and Amy Wrafter captivated the audience with their renditions of 'Ellis Island' and 'Black Velvet Band'. However, the competition was once again very strong in this discipline and it was Moate All-Whites who took home the Tommy McCormack Memorial Trophy.

Conor and Thomas Wrafter were back on stage in the Instrumental Music and gave a superb account of themselves. Many in the crowd thought they had done enough to win, but it wasn't to be as the larger, four-piece Bunbronsa act claimed the Bert McCabe Memorial Trophy.

Great credit is due to Geraldine and Fiona Fennell for reviving Scor na nOg in Kilbeggan and for all the work they have put in with the various acts over the past couple of months. To have four acts competing in the county final in our first full year back in competition was a terrific achievement. Well done also to Peter Wrafter, Martina Rochford and everyone else who has helped out.

We have a lot to build on for next year and look forward to taking part in the quiz after Christmas. Mentored by Anne-Marie Scally, the quiz team is made up of Mark Wrafter, Aideen Teehan, Lisa Ennis and Stephanie Scally.

Finally, Kilbeggan Scor wishes to extend its sympathy to the Longworth and Doherty families on their recent bereavements.
