Former Westmeath footballer John Keane believes that the imminent appointment of Jack Cooney as Westmeath senior football manager is a huge boost for football in the county.

Cooney and Joe Quaid have been nominated by the selection committee as managers of the county’s senior footballers and hurlers respectively.

Their positions are set to be ratified at tomorrow (Thursday) night’s county board meet and Keane who won an All-Star in 2008 told the Westmeath Independent that it was great to see someone within the county get the job.

“It’s a long time since a Westmeath man has stepped into that position and I think he’s deserving of everyone’s support and I just really hope everyone gets behind him,” stated Keane.

“I know I’ll be behind him, I know everyone in Garrycastle and Rosemount are behind him, so I hope he gets the support of the county and drives it on.”

Speculation is growing within the county that Keane could yet be part of Cooney’s management team, but he remained tight-lipped on the matter when asked.
