JFC Group 3
Athlone 4-5 Rosemount 3-9
Our juniors paid the price for wastefulness in front of goal when a Rosemount point deep into injury time condemned them to their first defeat of this year's Championship campaign in this Group 3 game played in Rosemount on Tuesday evening.

Despite creating several chances, Athlone failed to score in the opening 20 minutes and were fortunate that their hosts were almost as profligate, scoring only two points of their own in that period.  Athlone did finally open their account with a goal when Shane Kilroy-Glynn powered home a rebound after a Benny Martin effort had come back off the crossbar.  The sides then exchanged points from the remainder of the half, as points from Andy Lynam, Richie Greene and Sean Dowd were answered in kind by the home side to leave the half-time score 1-3 to 0-5 in Athlone's favour.

After taking 20 minutes to open their account in the first half, it took only 20 seconds for Athlone to do so in the second, when Shane Kilroy-Glynn set up Richie Greene to palm home his side's second goal.  However, more poor finishing meant that the visitors failed to stretch their lead and Rosemount brought themselves back into the game with a couple of points, before taking the lead with their first goal.  Athlone responded almost immediately with another Greene goal and a point from Joe Fallon gave them a three-point lead after 40 mins.  A Rosemount free was the only score of the middle period of the half as both sides were again guilty of poor finishing, but Athlone were rocked as the game entered its final 10 minutes when they conceded two goals in a minute to trail by four.  To their credit though, they refused to throw in the towel and a Richie Greene point, followed by his hat-trick goal brought them level again.  Both sides then went all out in search of a winning score, but lacked composure in front of goal, while Athlone were also guilty of turning the ball over when coming out of defence.  Eventually, after two minutes stoppage time, another turnover in an attacking position led to one final Rosemount attack, and although the initial attempt at a point fell short, the home full forward was quickest to react and he put the ball over the bar from close range to give his side the win and make them the favourites to emerge from Group 3 into the knockout stages of the Championship.
