U16 Football League Division 2

Lilliput Gaels 2-06 St. Mary's, Rochfortbridge 2-12

Our U16 team travelled to Rochfortbridge last Monday to take on the locals in our second league game of the year. We were minus the services of a number of players on the evening but thankfully a number of our U14's helped out after their busy Féile weekend and yet again they impressed. This was a very spirited performance by our lads and they created enough chances over the hour to have won the game comfortably, however a high wide count and some great goalkeeping by the Bridge's number one kept our scoreline down. After a tight first half, we trailed by 1-05 to 0-03. It would have been closer as we had the ball in the net but the referee didn't allow the advantage and instead called play back afterwards for a free in, which was pointed. A second half penalty earned and converted by Conor Murphy along with a well executed goal by Cody Finnane kept us in the chase but unfortunately for us we saw chance after chance either fly wide or saved. In the end, St. Mary's held out for the win but our lads had given them a great battle. We saw some great performances on the evening. Lorcan Kiernan was solid as a rock in the goals and his kickouts were excellent, Peter Reynolds and Darragh Seery bossed the midfield exchanges throughout, our defence worked tirelessly with Tiernan McMahon and Cody Finnane impressing. Up front, Conor Murphy had a fine game and he finished with a personal tally of 1-05. Well done to all! Team: Lorcan Kiernan, Luke Seery, Ryan Boyne, Mark Killian, Cody Finnane, Tiernan McMahon, Cathal Kelly, Darragh Seery, Peter Reynolds, Mark Kiernan, Conor Murphy, Peter Dalton, Adam McGoldrick, Killian Bolger, Sean Kincaid. Subs used: Peter Murphy, Ian Kiernan, Jack Gannon, Odhran Gavigan.

Rounders Championship

We played our second round of this years championship at home to Limekiln (Dublin) on Sunday last. Fielding first we managed to hold the visitors to four runs in the first innings while scoring five ourselves. The difference was the same at the bottom of the second with the score reading 10-9 in favour of Ballinagore. Limekiln leveled matters at 12-12 in the third innings but it was at the top of the fourth that Ballinagore came a cropper. Limekiln stood up to the mat and scored run after run (11 in total) to effectively kill off the Ballinagore challenge and this left the score 23-13 at the bottom of the fourth. A visibly tired Ballinagore stopped the rot in the fifth and final innings, conceding just four more runs to finish 14 adrift on a scoreline of Limekiln 27, Ballinagore 13. Despite the result there are positives to take from this game. To compete with such a seasoned and decorated team as Limekiln for so long shows the progress that Ballinagore are making as a team and if they stay together they will improve further. Some of the fielding, catching and batting was impressive from a spectators point of view and the experience gained in this game will stand to the team in the remainder of the championship. Team: Declan Claffey (Pitcher), Shane Heraty (Catcher, 2 Runs), Martin Furey (Short Stop, 3 Runs), Tally Flynn Capt. (1st Base, 2 Runs), Aoife Deegan (2nd Base), Dympna Claffey (3rd Base, 2 Runs), Enda Claffey (Left Outfield), David Langan (Centre Outfield, 3 Runs), Colette Langan (Right Outfield, 1 Run). Referee: Michael Dowling. We send our best wishes to the Limekiln player who suffered an unfortunate injury during the game.
