Fitzgerald sees room for improvement

Davy Fitzgerald believes Waterford can't afford to rely on Eoin Kelly to the extent they did against Offaly last Saturday if they are to progress further in the All-Ireland hurling championship. Kelly hit a remarkable 2-13 in Waterford's 2-18 to 0-18 win over Offaly and manager Fitzgerald said: "Eoin is there to score. He played well today, but he wouldn't be doing that only for the boys working hard out the field. "If we get a point or two off him the next day (against Wexford), we'll be delighted. Certainly, he couldn't carry us again. The other forwards are going to have to step up to the mark." The former Clare goalkeeper was pleased with the battling qualities displayed by his team. "Even when things weren't going well, we hung on in there and kept trying to give the right ball. That's what I wanted them to do. Still I'm not fooled - we'd be down the pecking order of All-Ireland contenders on that performance." Offaly boss Joe Dooley felt it was a game the Faithful let slip from their grasp. "It's a game we could have won. Waterford's experience probably made the difference. We have blooded a lot of new players this year who have stood up to the test so we're going in the right direction," he said.
