Phelan, Jenny

April 25, 2008
The Late Jenny Phelan For those of us who knew and befriended Jenny Phelan of St. Patrick's Terrace, Abbeyside, her untimely passing last weekend is a very grievous loss. In a GAA context it would be fair to say that Jenny Moloney (before she married Christy) was bred in the purple, and among her uncles was the late Jamie Moloney who served exemplarily as County Board chairman for a number of years. With her family roots so deeply embedded in the GAA it was no surprise at all that until the day (last Friday) she breathed her last, the games and the Association itself were very close to her kindly heart. Jenny courted and then married her neighbour and childhood sweetheart Christy Phelan, himself a member of a staunch GAA family and no mean hurler in his own playing days. He wore the blue of the Dungarvan club with pride and distinction through countless championship campaigns and was good enough to attract the attentions of the Waterford selectors who honoured him with the county jersey many times too. When Christy took up residence with Jenny in Abbeyside following their marriage and reared their family their allegiances transferred to Abbeyside/Ballinacourty. Their son, John, was a star member of 'County senior football championship winning team of last year and he has been an ever present on the Waterford senior team for a good while. He was in fact selected on the side to play Antrim in the National League in Belfast last Sunday but of course sad events so much closer to home knocked that particular assignment firmly on the head. On the score of honourability and integrity Jenny Phelan was as pure as the driven snow. She was someone whose company it was a delight to share, and as a wife and mother she was top of the class. Her untimely passing at such an early age after a period of illness bravely borne is an immense loss notjust to Christy and the entire family but to her legion of friends throughout the commumty. Jenny was laid to rest in St. Mary's cemetery in Dungarvan last Monday, and the vast concourse was a very fitting final tribute to her. Go ndeine Dia trocaire ar a h-anam dilis.
