Browne sees red

Waterford’s Tony Browne
28 April 2008

All-Star Tony Browne was issued with a straight red card during a weekend club game - but should be available for Waterford’s Munster championship opener against Clare on June 1.

Browne received his marching orders for a wild pull within 30 seconds of his half-time introduction for Mount Sion in their surprise 0-13 to 1-21 defeat to Abbeyside at Walsh Park on Sunday, and is expected to receive a four-week suspension. A longer suspension would rule him out of the Clare game.

The former Hurler of the Year didn’t start the game because of injury, but had scarcely time to draw breath when he received his marching orders from referee Tommy O’Sullivan.

The other major talking points on the opening weekend of the Waterford SHC was the hand injury sustained by Eoin Kelly in Passage East’s 2-8 to 2-19 defeat to Lismore, and Tallow’s impressive 3-16 to 0-14 victory over reigning champions Ballyduff Upper.
