Money missing in Waterford

22 April 2008

Waterford county board called a emergency meeting on Monday night to inform delegates that a very significant amount of money - believed to be in the region of EUR140,000 - is unaccounted for.

Many of the delegates arrived in Dungarvan believing they would be told of the impending resignation of Waterford hurling manager Justin McCarthy after it was reported on a website earlier in the day that he was about to quit his post.

However, within seconds of the meeting getting underway, delegates learned of the serious financial discrepancies that had been unearthed within the county board’s accounting system.

It’s believed that the major shortfall relates to the sale of championship tickets last year when Waterford won the Munster title before eventually losing to Limerick in the All-Ireland semi-final.

A highly respected divisional officer is understood to be at the centre of the controversy, although no names were mentioned at the in-camera meeting.
