Waterford senior football captain Shane Briggs wants the vacant manager's position filled quickly.

Briggs has called on the Waterford County Board to move swiftly to fill the void left by Niall Carew after he stood down from the position a fortnight ago.

Speaking to the Waterford News & Star, Briggs said: "Speaking to the County Board last Monday night, they had no candidate in yet. The players are taking it upon themselves to have a look around and see what's going on.

"Within the county, I don't know is there anyone out there who has the expertise to run a team at the highest level and I don't even know if there's an appetite for someone to want to do it. The last time when Niall got the job, he came out of the woodwork but I don't know will lightning strike twice.

"I have already said to the county board that whoever they get they have to be in situ by the first of October."
