Waterford Camogie Academy Launch At Carraiganore
"The overall purpose of the academy is to promote participation and excellence in camogie within Waterford"
The Official launch of the inaugural Waterford Camogie academy took place in the W.I.T Sports Complex in Carraiganore on Wednesday of last week May 16th.Conor Phelan the development Officer of W.I.T was the compere on the evening and welcomed all in attendance on the evening to the W.I.T sports complex to the Launch of the Camogie Academy. He then went on to introduce the first speaker of the evening De La Salles Joey Carton who is one of the founder members of this new initiative.
In Joeys speech he praised the efforts of Gall Tírs Patricia Jackman and the Brickey's Brendan Donnelly who came up with the idea of the Academy initially. Joey went on to explain briefly the concepts of this great initiative, and explained that they are introducing the academy on a faised basis to include the County's U14 and U 16 County Squads which will include up to 60 players from around the County for 2012. In 2013 they hope to have the County's U18 included followed 2 to 3 years down the road to develop the U13 and U15 squads as well. Joey explained that this academy will take place every fortnight with training sessions taking place from the end of May until the end of August. These training sessions will include the development of the different playing skills along with talks on both lifestyles and diet and nutrition of a camogie player. It is hoped that the academy will develop the underage player with the aim to identify at a later stage players to go on and represent the County as an adult player. The academy is also hoped to help County/Club managers/coaches to get more training for the coaching of girls to get the best out of them in the field of play. Also, the academy is hoped to help the County Board to develop the various County teams.
Joey also said that he is delighted to be involved with W.I.T and the National Coaching and development centre and its excellent facilities made available to the girls. He said that its great to have such huge resources in personal in the college to help out in the academy and also to have Corks Mary O'Connor as support. In the financial aspect of the academy each player is expected to contribute €25 as well as having W.I.T and the Munster Camogie Council as sponsors. Joey also thanked County Board treasurer who was of immense help to the financial part of the academy.
The next speaker on the night was W.I.T's Sinead Neilan. Sinead welcomed all to the event and said that she was delighted to be associated with the academy and was delighted to have Waterford Camogie to be associated with the National camogie and Hurling development initiative. She also said that this academy would be of great help to both the County and Club Camogie teams and wished everyone the best of luck with the programme especially Joey carton who was one of the main people to push for this programme.
Next up to speak and to officially launch the academy was Waterford County Camogie Board Chairperson Tricia McCarthy. She said in her speech that it was a fantastic initiative and that the County Board will be 100% behind the academy and commended all County Board Officers, Trainers and Munster Council for all their hard work in the development of camogie. She thanked all in W.I.T for all their support to Waterford camogie. Tricia then went on to pronounce the academy officially launched.
