Waterford SHC: shocks galore as holders are beaten
May 14, 2012

Ballygunner captain Shane O'Sullivan lifts the trophy after the game.
It was a weekend of shocks in the Waterford SHC as holders Ballygunner, favourites De La Salle and traditional giants Mount Sion all lost.
Despite not conceding a score in the first half, Ballygunner crashed to a 0-9 to 2-10 defeat to Dungarvan. The holders looked to be on course for a comfortable victory when leading 0-6 to 0-0 at the break, but Dungarvan staged a brilliant second half recovery which was aided by goals from Cathal Curran and Ryan Donnelly.
De La Salle went down to Fourmilewater on a 1-10 to 0-18 scoreline at Fraher Field on Saturday. The city side led 0-6 to 0-5 at the break, but with county star Shane Walsh pulling the strings, the underdogs stormed back to take victory in the second half.
The other big shock was Dunhill's 1-18 to 1-6 defeat of Mount Sion at Walsh Park yesterday. The winners' goal was scored by Paul Doyle 14 minutes from the end.
In the weekend's other games, Roanmore and Tallow drew 0-16 to 1-13, while John Hurney's late goal handed Abbeyside a 2-17 to 2-13 victory over Passage East.
