Waterford hurling star Pauric Mahony has been ruled out of the championship after undergoing groin surgery over the weekend.

Mahony struggled with the injury during Waterford's Allianz Hurling League campaign and was left with no option but to have surgery. He is facing a four-month recovery period, meaning he will miss the entire championship.

The highly-rated forward, who made his Munster SHC debut against Limerick last summer, was a notable absentee from the Ballygunner team that opened their Waterford SHC defence with a 0-17 to 0-12 victory over Abbeyside in Dungarvan on Saturday evening. Tweet
