Munster MFC: Kerry get job done in first half
April 18, 2012
Kerry 1-14
Waterford 1-3
A dominant first half display paved the way for Kerry's comfortable victory over Waterford in last night's Munster MFC losers' group clash at Dungarvan's Fraher Field.
Stung by their seven-point loss to All-Ireland champions Tipperary last Saturday, the Kingdom came out with all guns blazing and had the ball in the Waterford net inside 90 seconds when Conor Keane fisted home Niall Sheedy's high delivery. With Kieran Murphy outstanding at midfield, the visitors continued to pile forward with four points from Jack Savage and two from Murphy helping them to a commanding 1-7 to 0-0 interval lead.
Murphy extended Kerry's lead to 11 points on the restart before Waterford - who had full back Jack O'Donnell sent off three minutes from the end - scored 1-2 without reply in a three-minute spell to bring themselves back into contention. After Ryan Donnelly finally opened their account from a free in the 37th minute and Michael Curry added a point from play, Laurence Houlihan was brought down for a penalty and Donnelly rifled the spot-kick to the roof of the net.
But Mickey Ned O'Sullivan's charges hit back with scores from Savage and Sheehy to ease through to a losers' group final meeting with Limerick next Tuesday, April 24. The prize for the winners will be a Munster MFC semi-final clash with Clare.
