Waterford Crystal Cup: Déise see off students
February 06, 2012
Waterford advance to the last four of the competition after a 3-19 to 1-19 win over UCC at Carriganore on Sunday.
The home side produced a fantastic first half performance leading 3-10 to 0-8 at the break. The first of a hatrick of goals came on 20 minutes from captain Michael 'Brick' Walsh.
10 minutes later Martin O'Neill got the second and three minutes after Waterford were firmly in command when wing forward Maurice Shanahan buried to the net after good play by Walsh.
Only 3 players who lined out in UCC's Fitzgibbon Cup opener last Wednesday, where they destroyed DCU started yesterday's game.
A couple of half time substitutions in particular the introduction of Willie Griffin and Shane Bourke proved to be effective as the students started the second half brightly.
The students reduced the deficit significantly with some fine points and a goal from Brian Hartnett two minutes from time but a strong opening half ensured a win for the Déise.
