Waterford's senior hurlers played two challenge matches over the weekend.

As the countdown to the national hurling league continues, manager Michael Ryan had plenty of food for thought following useful workouts against Waterford IT and Laois on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Saturday's clash with the students was Ryan's first match at the helm and he kept a close eye on both sides as they battled out an entertaining 0-23 to 1-20 draw at the Carraiganore Complex.

Newcomer Paidi Nevin struck five points from play and Maurice Shanahan floated over ten, including nine frees.

On Sunday, Ryan took his charges to Errill where they defeated Laois by 3-18 to 0-14. Michael Walsh hit 2-3 from centre forward and former county minor captain Martin O'Neill (Mount Sion) registered 1-12.

Waterford face UCC in the first round of the Crystal Cup on Sunday, February 5th.
