Wexford football manager Jason Ryan admits he was tempted to take the Waterford hurling reins.

The former Waterford footballer was tipped to succeed Davy Fitzgerald at the Decies helm last Autumn but in the end opted to stay on for a fifth year with the Model County.

In an interview in today's Irish Examiner, Ryan concedes that the idea of switching codes and managing his native county was enticing: "The easiest thing for me to say without causing any trouble is I thought about the job.

"It was a big decision - any decision is when you're involved with a group. You want to make sure you're not outstaying your job and that you're the right man for the job.

"It was a case of getting it right in my own head. There are plenty of managers who get different opportunities and offers and I had to weigh everything up."
