Wexford keen to hold onto Ryan

Wexford officials are hoping to put an end to speculation linking Jason Ryan with the vacant Waterford hurling manager's position.

Rumours are rife that the De La Salle clubman is poised to replace Davy Fitzgerald in the Deise hot-seat with former Kilkenny goalkeeper James McGarry set to work alongside him as a coach.

While Ryan doesn't have a strong hurling background, he has excellent managerial credentials and if appointed, would become Waterford's first native manager since 1996 when Tony Mansfield was replaced by Cork's Gerald McCarthy.

However, Wexford are determined to hold onto the 36-year-old who has led them to two Leinster final appearances, as well as to an All-Ireland semi-final against Tyrone, in the past four years.

"We would hope to make an announcement later this week," Wexford chairman Ger Doyle said yesterday.
