Quinn, Patsy

The Late Patsy Quinn

The news when it came last week was not exactly unexpected for most of us, but at the age of sixty three how tragically untimely Patsy Quinn's death has been. Patsy will be remembered as a pillar of strenght in the number three senior hurling jersey for Lismore overmany years, and while that coveted county senior championship medal tantalisingly eluded him throughout his illustrious career he will always rank as one of the greatest full backs of his day on the club scene.

He will be remembered too for the time in the red and white stripes of Tourin, but whenever the hurling expliots of Patsy Quinn are recalled it will be as Lismore's full back supereme.

Away from the playing field he also served as a selector when the club last lifted the senior hurling title in 1992, and as a club fundraiser he was without equal.

His son, Brian delivered a memorable tribute to his dad at a packed St. Carthage's Cathedral last Wednesday at the conclusion of the funeral mass, and the graveside oration by former Munster Council chairman, Jimmy O'Gorman, was equally moving. It was no less than the great man deserved.

With club members in their and amber attire providing the guard of honour, one of the biggest and most representative funeral corteges Lismore has ever seen wended its way to St. Cathage's cemetery where Patsy was laid to rest. It was the most impressive final tribute one could ever have imagined. For my own part it was a pleasure and indeed a privilege to have known and befriended Patsy Quinn for as long as I did. In terms of honesty, sincerity, and integrity they came no finer.

To his wife and best friend, Joan; his sons, Brian, Paul, Stephen and Pat; his daughter, Karen and all other members of the extended Quinn family the column extends its heartfelt sympathy.
