NFL 3: Waterford pile on the pressure for Limerick

February 20, 2011
Waterford 2-8
Limerick 0-8

Limerick's status as Allianz National Football League Division 3 promotion candidates has been well and truly dismissed after their second successive defeat on Sunday.

Maurice Horan's men, who have gone so close to a Munster title in each of the last two summers, went down to Tipperary in their opening fixture and lost out to Waterford at Fraher Field this weekend.

It was some measure of revenge for the Deise, who lost out when the sides met in the Division 4 final last spring.

Mark Ferncombe, introduced early on after an injury to Joey Veale, struck both goals for the home side and also came up with a crucial point in a fine cameo.

His first goal put Waterford 1-3 to 0-0 in front and Limerick had to wait until four minutes from half-time for their first score of the game.

There was six in it at the break (1-5 to 0-2) and despite an improved second half showing from Limerick, the same margin was in place at the finish with Ferncombe's second goal and points from Sean Fleming and Tommy Prendergast keeping Waterford's noses in front.
