Owens eyes promotion
February 03, 2011
Waterford manager John Owens has set his sights on promotion ahead of his team's National Football League opener with Wexford this weekend.
The Deise men travel to Wexford Park to take on Jason Ryan's men and a win would be the perfect start to secure back-to-back promotions in the NFL.
"We're going to go for promotion and prepare for that to happen. The same situation with last year it's a very tight group," Owens told the Waterford News and Star.
"Division Four last year everyone wanted get out if it and in the last couple of matches we were in a position to go for that. This particular year is the exact same. The attitude of the players is to win enough matches to get promotion and it's great to see that attitude."
Wexford come into the game looking for their first win of 2011, after suffering heavy defeats to DIT and Dublin in the O'Byrne Cup, and Owens has been monitoring the Slayneysiders' form since the start of the new season.
"We have a number matches that will be great to be involved in and Wexford is the start of those," he said.
"They have lost a number of fellows as well. Jason Ryan has been unfortunate to lose them and again those people are retiring as well as the likes of Mattie Forde and David Fogarty. Those boys will be a loss to them."
