The death occurred recently of Mr John Sweeney, of 5 The Orchard, Kingsmeadow, Waterford. John, who had battled with lung cancer for over a year, died on Tuesday, December 9. his removal took place from Thompson's Funeral Home, Barrack Street, on Wednesday at 6.15pm to the Holy Family Church. Requiem mass was held on Thursday, December 11. He was buried afterwards in St Otteran's cemetery. Aged 68, John was born in Waterford on March 9, 1940 and was the son of Edward and Agnes Sweeney, 21 Tycor Avenue, Waterford. He attended school at Mount Sion CBS and later took up work as a mechanical fitter. He began his working life in "The Jute Factory" Tycor, before going onto work with Murphy engineering. He finished his career working for Waterford co-op in the Kilmeaden Cheese factory. A keen sportsman in his youth, John played hurling and football with Mount Sion CLG and soccer with Tycor Athletic. In latter years, he was an avid sports fan, particularly of the Waterford hurlers. John was a keen lover of Irish culture, he was proud of his cupla focal as Gaeilge and he had an interest in Penning poetry/ Limericks of events, travel destinations and topical interests of the day. He enjoyed his weekly card game on Friday nights in the Mount Sion Social Centre and loved his holidays to the Mediterranean, particularly the island of Majorca where he enjoyed many visits with his wife Teresa. The highlight of all these holidays was a full family holiday to Salou in June of 2007.Survived by his wife, Teresa, sons Sean, Warren, Wayne and Seamus, sister Mary, grandchildren, Andrew, Dylan, Shauna, Callum, Saoirse, Cathal and Abbie, John will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
