St. Peter's and Heston Gaels were celebrating last weekend following their respective victories over Dunedin Connollys and St. Ann's in the provincial intermediate and junior football finals. At Leeds on Sunday, a last gasp point from Brian McMahon gave St. Peter's of Manchester a dramatic 1-16 to 3-9 extra-time victory over Scottish champions Dunedin. McMahon was a worthy man of the match after helping himself to a personal tally of 1-7. The signs looked encouraging for Connollys when they led by 2-1 to 0-3 at half-time, but St. Peter's staged a great second half recovery and it was the Edinburgh side who needed a late point from Cormac O'Gara to force extra-time. The sides were still level, 3-6 to 1-12, after extra-time and so an additional 20 minute-period was required. And just when it seemed that they couldn't be separated, McMahon popped over the winner for the Lancashire champions. There was no such drama at Pairc na hEireann where Heston Gaels of London accounted for Lancashire's St. Ann's on a 3-7 to 1-4 scoreline. While Heston were flattered by their nine-point win, they played well enough in the second half to justify their win. St. Ann's opened brightly but a goal from Paul Blackford late in the first half brought Heston onto level terms at the interval. On the restart, Michael Grogan scored a goal to put the Manchester side back in the driving side. However, Heston went on to dominate the remainder of the game and made victory safe with further goals from Blackford and Michael Coen. Tweet
