The chairman of the London County Board has pledged a full investigation into allegations that a referee was assaulted after a London senior football championship game last weekend.

Match official John Reape found himself at the centre of a storm following a dramatic conclusion to the clash between St Kiernan's and Kingdom Kerry Gaels.

The Kingdom side needed to win by at least four points to book a place in the semi-finals and appeared to be on course when they held a five-point lead as the game ticked into injury time.

However, referee Reape played eight minutes of added time, during which St Kiernan's plundered a goal through Adrian Moyles and points from Moyles and Michael McMahon which saw the game finish in a draw and Kiernan's advance at the expense of their opponents.

A brawl at the final whistle involving players, officials and substitutes from both sides culminated in alleged assaults on Reape both on the field and in the dressing-rooms.

Quoted in the Irish Post, London GAA chairman Tommy Harrell said, "Upon receipt of [the referee's report] we will carry out a full investigation."

The incidents are the latest in a fraught summer for Gaelic games, with referee Martin Sludden assaulted live on television at the end of a similarly controversial Leinster football final in July.

St Kiernan's will now face Neasden Gaels in the last four, with Parnells meeting four-in-a-row-chasing Tir Chonaill Gaels in the other semi-final. Tweet
