Pennine League Division 2 - Sunday 8th March
Result
St. Peter's 0-16 St. Benedict's 2-06
St. Peter's opened their Pennine League Account with a hard earned victory over St. Benedict's of Leeds. This fixture was played at Beeston Sports Complex and the heavy underground did little to help either team get into any their usual running games. St. Benedict's started the brighter and tacked on a couple of frees while St. Peter's were wasteful in attack but were winning the midfield battle.
After a misplaced pass in their own half, St. Peter's conceded possession and the result was a well rifled shot by the Benedict's corner forward into the roof of the net. Eoin Meeney was pulling the strings in the half forward line for Peter's and he was the catalyst for most of plays in the first half. Stewart Cherry kicked over a fine point from play to leave the game even at the interval.
The second half was a very scrappy affair and both teams will agree that the quality of tackling was of a low standard. However, scores continued to be traded as the effects of the 13 a side formation allowed for acres of space in the respective forward lines. Just when it looked like St. Peter's were going to ease to the win after gaining a three point lead with 10 minutes remaining, Benedict's scored a somewhat fortuitous goal after a calamitous mix up on the full back line.
Shane Gallagher came into his own and his accuracy from free's and shooting from open play (5 points in total) ensured that Peter's had enough left in the tank to take the win with 4 points to spare. Benedict's for their part will be pleased with their half forward lines performance and general off the ball running. St. Peter's lined out with many of last years County Final starting XV and will have been pleased by the performances of their new players, Paidi O'Se in the back line, Stewart Cherry in midfield and Brendan Cousons at full forward.
A special word of mention must go to St Peter's Barry McGeehan and Joe Corcoran for their respective Miss of the Season contenders. It's fair to say it was easier to score than blaze the ball wide or trickle it into the keeper's hands. Soccer AM would have had a field day!
The next game for St. Peter's takes place on the 21st March against St. Patrick's in a Junior League fixture at Hough End. Throw in at 1pm.
Training continues indoors at Platt Lane Indoor Complex on Tuesdays at 7pm. New players are welcome to come up and train/meet the gang.
