Connacht Council secretary John Prenty expects many Mayo fans who are travelling to New York for next Sunday's Connacht SFC opener not to attend the game.

With Gaelic Park's capacity restricted to about 4,500, there is unlikely to be enough tickets to appease Mayo's huge travelling support.

"If there are 10,000 people going over then there are going to be 5,500 of them at the malls, they won't be at the match, it's as simple as that," the Ballyhaunis man told the Mayo News Football Podcast.

"Once you get to 4,500 people, that's it.

"From what's I'm hearing, there might be 300, 400 or 500 tickets available (for general sale) on the morning of the match, but that'll be it. So I'll go back to what I've been telling people for the last few months, if you're going to New York, go for the craic, not for the match."

He added: "We never had more than 3,500 people going to a match in Gaelic Park, no matter how many people went out to New York with any team - so that would leave you with room for 1,000 extra.

"But if there are 10,000 Mayo people going, then a lot of them will be in Times Square or somewhere, but they won't be in Gaelic Park."
