Four Masters, Coventry Club Notes
July 02, 2008
Warwickshire Senior League result for week ending 29/6/08:
John Mitchells (Birmingham) 2-07
Four Masters (Coventry) 3-05
Four Masters travelled into Birmingham on Sunday midday looking to continue their good run in the Warwickshire League this year but 10 minutes into the game, it wasn't looking too good when John Mitchell's scored a goal and couple of points to Four Masters solitary point, with the home side playing against a strong wind in the first half. The away side soon got into their rhythm of play and some stout defending from their full back line of Messrs McCormick, Ewing and Mc Laughlin and centre-half-back Andy Doherty soon had their opponents forwards figured out. Four Masters grabbed a lifeline with a fortuitious goal from Danny Cuffe followed by a superb point from a 45 by Andy Doherty soon had John Mitchell's reeling. Four Masters then conceded a hotly-disputed penalty for a foot block but their keeper saved the penalty and the rebound. Four Masters immediately went down the other end and their midfielder Brian Cuffe coolly slotted the ball past the Mitchell's keeper. But before the referee's short whistle John Mitchell's full forward stole in behind the full back to score a fine goal which was immediately followed by another major from Four Masters talisman Cuffe again. This put just 2 pts between the teams in favour of the away side.
Half-time score John Mitchells: 2-04 Four Masters 3-03
The second half started scrappily enough where both teams were finding it hard to find their passes due to the inclement weather coming down on Pairc na hEireann. Indeed it was the homeside who struck first with their half forward stroking the ball over to put the minimum between the teams. The next few minutes were vital for either side. Four Masters got the ball up the field through smart passing from the backs to the forward which resulted in a 18 yrd free for which Declan Harkin stepped up to convert the minor, thus increasing the Masters lead by 2 again.
John Mitchells then piled on the pressure using the wind to good effect but numerous amount of wides from play and frees kept Four Masters in the hunt for 2 points. One passage of play from the homeside straight through the middle of Pairc na hEireann nearly resulted in a great goal for them but up stepped the Four Masters keeper to again keep his side ahead. Then with approximately 6 minutes remaining Donegal lads Cuffe and Mc Laughlin decide to keep possession for their team which nearly resulted in point for Mitchell's to which their manager reminded them that keeping possession is not one of their strongest skills.
Somehow Four Masters held on for a 1 point victory to continue their good run in the Warwickshire League. Man of the Match going to Four Masters midfielder Brian Cuffe.
Final Score John Mitchells 2-07 Four Masters 3-05.
