The opening day of the secondary hurling competition saw wins for Kildare, Carlow, Meath and defending champions Westmeath. Last year's beaten finalists Kildare stormed past Derry at Newbridge by the tune of 2-28 to 1-12. Tony Murphy and Michael Divilly (second half) got the home side's goals as they led by eight points at the interval while Sam Dodds grabbed Derry's goal. The holders were impressive winners over Roscommon at Mullingar as they defeated the Connacht men by 3-23 to 0-13, with Derek McNicholas, John Shaw and Paddy Dowdall grabbing the goals. Johnny Dooley's men led by 3-13 to 0-3 at the break on their way to a comfortable win. Carlow bounced back from their Kehoe Cup final loss as they saw off London by 2-24 to 1-9 at Dr Cullen Park. It was a stunning second half performance that did the trick for the Barrowsiders who only led by 0-9 to 0-6 at the break. Goals from Craig Doyle (2) and Robbie Doyle sealed the win while Colin Hughes and Mark Brennan were in scintillating point scoring form with 0-5 apiece. Mark Mythen grabbed the London goal. Meath had to work hard to shake off a stubborn Mayo challenge at Pairc Tailteann as they edged out the Connacht men 0-16 to 0-12. Niall Hackett grabbed nine points while the Royals led by 0-9 to 0-6 at half time.
