St Colmcilles scored a comprehensive 1.11 to 1.04 win over a shocked St Vincents at Cotlandswick on Saturday in the Senior Football League.
The previous weekend Vincents drew away against county champions, Cambridge Parnells. On the same day Colmcilles were thoroughly outfoxed by Glen Rovers at Oxhey Park.
Bainisteóir, Micheal McCarey, manning the goal line for Vincents was perplexed at the dip in form. Shooting four opening half wides, 20 minutes elapsed before their opening point came from a Darren Doherty free. Their one other reward of the half came as the interval approached when Mickey Kelly had the side's best score when curling over from 30 yards.
St Colmcilles, too, were guilty of some wayward shooting. Partial amend were made when Aaron Ó Byrne saw acreage between himself and McCarey on the line. As he closed in on the goal he cleverly clipped the ball to the corner of the net. Still, only midway through the first quarter when Colmcilles' keeper Pat Walsh was forced to make a fine save from Tom Childs. Walsh quickly moved the ball to wing back, Diarmuid Magee. Linking with Jason Lohan they pushed forward to find Damien Jennings who pointed.
Nigel Loughran and Neil Gallagher for the hosts and Jack Nelly and Tom Ryan had a ding-dong battle all afternoon for supremacy at midfield. The contest was the highlight of the afternoon but the Vincents' pair lacked the support that Colmcilles' wing back, Adrian Ó Rourke gave his colleagues as he popped up all over the place.
An opening half that failed to scale any real heights saw Colmcilles retire to the dressing rooms leading 1.06 to two points.
Hopes that a James Furey goal in the 3rd quarter would ignite the Vincents side did not materialise. They introduced Dermot McCabe to stem the tide but fine footballer he is, he was obviously not match-fit.
Further points from Gallagher, Paul Dolan (45), Loughran, Ó Byrne and James Lane sealed a deserved victory for Colmcilles to give the side their first league points.
At Coldhams Common, home side Cambridge Parnells again drew. Playing Oxford team Éire Óg in their second league game, Parnells scored 3.05 to their opponents 2.08.
