St. Brendan's Lancashire notes

February 03, 2010
St Brendan's held their Annual General Meeting at St. Kentigern's Irish Club in Fallowfield on Sunday 24th January.

A crowd well in excess of 50 people attended and took part in an afternoon of lively discussion and debate. Various club matters which arose throughout the year were discussed, and all members voiced valid opinions.

One of the topics touched on was the overwhelming success of the 2009 50th Anniversary Dinner Dance for which over 700 people gathered at The Palace Hotel. Present on the night were club members past and present, Uachtaran-Tofa Cumann Luthchleas Gael Christy Cooney, the Sam Maguire Cup, Mr Cuthbert Donnelly, Double All-Ireland Winner, All-Star and former St. Brendan's player Down's Neil Collins, and entertainment guests Philomena Begley and the Rambling Men. The 51st Dinner Dance will be held at the same venue on Saturday 20th March with special guest Joe McDonagh (former GAA President and All-Ireland Hurling winner with Galway) and entertainment by John McCain. Tickets are £35 each and are now on sale. Contact any club committee member for details.

Also touched on and acknowledged was the year of great success enjoyed by the Senior Footballers as they ended the season with 2 trophies and can claim to be the only side in Manchester who picked up any silverwear in 2009. A Pennine League Division 2 success, beating a strong St Peter's side in a thrilling final, will see the Seniors back in the top flight after a short absence. Hopefully this stronger competition will prepare them well for the Championship this year. A notable, and well deserved, victory over Oisin's in the Wolfetone semi-final set up another final appearance against St. Peter's and the lads didn't disappoint . Led by longer-serving senior-team stalwarts such as Tommy McIlroy and Brian Johnston, and ably assisted by players with Senior Intercounty experience such as Donegal's Cathal Brennan and Down's John Gibney, the team disposed of St. Peter's in an epic final day of season clash. The lads can be satisfied with their efforts for the season but with the addition of a number of new players from a selection of counties within Ireland they will look to go one further this season by mounting a serious championship challenge.
