Hertfordshire Notes in the All Britain Club JFC, Dympnas led by four points as the fourth quarter approached but when réiteóir, Martin Lydon blew for full time the score was: St Dympnas 2.06 : Cúchullains (Yorkshire) 1.12 Heavy rain overnight left Páirc na hÉireann sodden but the sides adapted well to the conditions to serve up highly entertaining game. The Herts' champions began well but had three wides in the opening five minutes. Their opponents responded by scoring three points in the next six minutes. No 11, Derek Steele was having a great game and scored a wonderful point to open Dympnas' account. However, the Yorkshire side immediately replied with a point. The 22nd minute began a good spell for the Herts' champions. Their man of the match, full forward, James McKenzie, pointed. Then Luke Maloney passed to McKenzie who goaled. As half-time approached Steve Doran soloed down the right wing but his shot was saved by the winners' goalkeeper. A goal then might have spurred Dympnas on at the start of the second half. They had lost brothers, Norman and John Prendegast of the full back line through injury and the resulting positional changes didn't help Dympnas chances. On the restart, the Newcastle side were quick to equalise. But in the 3rd minute Doran cut through the winners' defence before shaking the net with a shot to the corner of the net. It put St Dympnas in front for the first time. The Yorkshire champions replied with two points but then began a good Dympnas spell with three points in as many minutes. Maloney was unerring with two points from two frees. The second came after Kevin Killeen was fouled when going through. Doran had a second score when he pointed in the 14h minute to send Dympnas' hopes soaring. However, the Northerners responded well and a spate of scoring reversed the order. Dympnas made a final onslaught but an injury picked up by McKenzie limited the side's options. For Dympnas, goalkeeper, Liam Berry continues to improve. Half back, Alan Gallagher also had to retire injured and we must wonder would the outcome have been different had the defence remained intact. Here Killeen was inspirational and Steve Byrne and Éamonn Donnelly battled to the end. Midfielders, Micheal Ó Kane and teenager Damien Maloney had good games but the winners held an advantage here. Dympnas' Bainisteóir, Gerry Naughton countered by introducing corner forward, Luke Maloney as a third midfielder. In attack, Steele and McKenzie were well supported by Shane Gallagher and Wesley Keane. Still, Dympnas did Herts' proud. Disappointment here but their commitment and enthusiasm brought a sparkle to the game in Herts this year. The Fr Ó Hanlon Cup remains the one 2008 trophy to be played for. A decision should be made shortly as to when it will be played.
