Great away win for under-21 side

January 03, 2002
Antrim under-21 side got their first win in the current Hastings Cup under-21 football competition when they travelled to Wicklow and defeated the home county on a scoreline of 1-9 to 0-9. The visitors were on top in the opening half and were full value for their 0-7 to 0-2 lead at the break. However, Wicklow made a dramatic comeback in the second-half and in the third quarter they had scored six unanswered points to go into a one point lead. The game's crucial score came midway through the second-half when Antrim found the net through Cargin's Niall Doyle. After that Antrim controlled the game and held on for victory. Among the point scorers for Antrim were Conal Kelly (St. John's), James Storey (Portglenone) and Chris McCann (St. Gall's). After the game, the Antrim boss Andy McCallin said that he was very pleased with his sides performance, except for a ten minute spell in the second-half when they allowed the home side to dominate the match. He added: "The players showed plenty of character especially in the second-half and in the end were worthy winners.''
