Tyrone star Mattie Donnelly aims to follow in his father's footsteps by leading Trillick to Tyrone SFC success this weekend.

Back in 1986, Liam Donnelly captained the tight-knit club to their last senior victory and Donnelly junior will have the honour of lifting the O'Neill Cup if they can overcome Killclogher on Sunday.

Having returned to the senior grade, the St Macartan's club are this year's surprise packets having qualified for the final at the first attempt.

"He was the captain in '86, the last time they won it," Donnelly told The Irish News.

"It would be one for the books, but we're not interested in those ties, we're just interested in writing our own history, and that more so would be brilliant for this group of players that are so close, just to write their own history.

"We're in a final now, and it's just about getting that performance out. We're just one step away from that, and it's going to be a humdinger as well against probably the best team in Tyrone this last year or two. None have been as consistent as Killyclogher.

"Killyclogher, rightly so, will be big favourites. They're league champions, they're probably a bit further down the line in terms of development, in terms of experience, so we are going to have to produce something similar, and better, if we're to have a chance of winning it."
