Tyrone club cancels GAA event due to PSNI involvement

Derrytresk cancelled a road safety event due to supporters' objections over the PSNI's involvement.
The 'Live To Play' scheme's education event - established by Ulster Council to encourage road safety - was due to take place at the Derrytresk grounds this Monday but the club cancelled after some of its members threatened to picket the event as the PSNI were participating.
Club chairman Barney Campbell confirmed in this morning's Irish News: "At the end of the day, it was a good thing for young people to be aware of this.
"But the other side of the coin is people were not happy with them [PSNI officers] being there.
"I got a few calls and the ones that did call were very insistent that it should not be happening. If I had been told at the start the police were going to be there, I would have known myself.
"There was talk about a picket and there was no way we were going to go down that road."
Tyrone PRO Damian Harvey added: "At the end of the day, it's not something that Tyrone GAA is forcing on clubs. If clubs take it on, then that's good and, if they decide it's not for them, we have to respect that decision."
