McKenna Cup: Tyrone reign over Queen's

January 08, 2012
Tyrone had to come from behind to beat Queen's by 1-13 to 1-5 at Omagh.

Debutants Johnny Lafferty and Ronan O'Neill made a big impact for Mickey Harte's new-look team but it could have been different had not the undaunted students missed three goal chances in the first half.

Tyrone led by a point after twelve minutes: 0-3 to 0-2. Laverty marked his debut at full forward with a brace of early points after Donal O'Hare and Tommy McGuigan had traded scores.

O'Hare then brought it back to 0-3 to 0-2 when his shot was excellently tipped over the bar by O'Neill County custodian John Devine.

The Red Hands added another and Mark Sweeney had it back down to one point before Tommy McGuigan and Martin Penrose points left it double scores, 0-6 to 0-3, at the interval.

Caolan Rafferty's goal brought the stubborn students level and an upset appeared to be on the cards when Sean Warnock pointed to fire them ahead.

However, inspirational substitute Ronan O'Neill netted a 52nd-minute goal within seconds of entering the fray to turn the match on its head.

Peter Harte, Colm Cavanagh, Niall McKenna and Aidan Cassidy tagged on late scores for the winners.
