Notes Philadelphia, Here I Come! Another significant event in our club's proud and colourful history took place last weekend with the staging of Brian Friel's famous Irish play 'Philadelphia, Here I Come!' in the Moy Parochial Hall. The show attracted huge crowds on each of the four nights (Thursday-Sunday) and was a major success due to the combined efforts of the recently formed Moy Players and An Mhaigh G.A.C. An extraordinary amount of work went into putting this event together. Director Seanie Donaghy and his cast spent many weeks and months rehearsing for the play, while others worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this one of the most talked about events in the Moy for quite some time. It was a real team effort with everyone doing their bit to ensure the large audiences each night had a wonderful time. While the cast and backstage crew worked wonders to provide high-quality entertainment for the hundreds of people who filed through the doors, our large front-of-house team pulled out all the stops to make this a memorable experience for everyone involved. The feedback from the Moy Players' debut production has been extremely positive and it is hoped that the newly formed group, along with An Mhaigh G.A.C., can stage more great shows in the years to come. Club Chairman Peter McKearney, in his programme address, stated: "Let us hope that this venture is the start of a revival for performing arts and music in the Moy and Clonfeacle Parish. Theatre, drama and music must be encouraged and supported in the local community as it helps bring people together and create a greater sense of community spirit while maintaining the culture and tradition of years gone by." Thanks to each and everyone who helped out in any way for the Moy production of 'Philadelphia, Here I Come' and to those who travelled from near and far to support this event. A special dvd of Sunday night's final performance, complete with after-show speeches and presentations, will soon be available for purchase. Cead Mile Failte! Among those who attended the recent production of 'Philadelphia, Here I Come' and gave great support to the venture were the two new priests in our parish, Fr Gabriel Bannon P.P. and Fr John Connolly. The committee, players and members of An Mhaigh Tír na nÓg G.A.C. would like to take this opportunity to welcome both Fr Bannon and Fr Connolly into our community and look forward to working with them for the good of our parish. Ladies Sponsored Run/Walk An Mhaigh ladies are holding a Sponsored Fun Run/Walk for their senior and youth players at Dungannon Park this Sunday afternoon (18th October) from 3.00pm to 5.00pm. All club members are urged to give generously to this fundraising venture and are also welcome to come along on the day of the Fun Run/Walk and give the girls plenty of encouragement! There was no jackpot winner and three match three winners who each receive £35. The prize next week is £1200. Fr Rocks complete double. Fr Rocks seniors completed an historic double at Healy Park on Sunday past. Cookstown defeated Gortin on a scoreline of 2-07 to 1-6 to secure the Paddy Cullen Cup, a crown which they first won in 1962. This completed a superb year for the Rocks who now embark on their first Ulster Club campaign with two trophies secured. Fr Rocks started the game as hot favourites, but found it difficult to settle in the opening minutes. The Rocks had Ryan Pickering to thank for some brilliant defending during this period. A moment of sheer class arrived in the sixth minute of the game, a great pass from Martin Murray found Owen Mulligan who turned inside the Gortin defender and fired an unstoppable shot to the roof of the net. This was the start which Cookstown craved, however they failed to build on it, and did not score for a further ten minutes. It was during this period that Gortin gained the upper hand and scored 1-1 to leave them in the lead. Conor O'Hare stopped the rot on fifteen minutes and a well taken free from Martin Murray put Cookstown into the lead. Gortin did respond with a Kevin Mossey point, however the major turning point in the game came seconds before half time. A high ball into Raymond Mulgrew caused havoc in the Gortin defence, who fouled inside the box to give away a penalty, Barry Hughes stepped up to take the spotkick and displayed great composure to fire to the back of the net. This gave Cookstown a lead at halftime of 2-2 to 1-2. The Rocks started the second period in much more determined mood. They signalled their intent in the first few minutes when Christopher Eastwood fired over a great effort from play, this was followed a minute later when Owen Mulligan sent over a great effort off the outside of his boot. The Rocks appeared to be in control of the game at this stage, however Gortin once again fought back and with ten minutes to go were still in the mix with Fr Rocks lead reduced to three. Further scores from Conor Mullan and brilliant long range effort from Barry Mulligan seemed to end the contest, but the dismissal of Conor Mullan late in the game left the last few minutes uncomfortable. Fr Rocks held possession well and held on to secure a brilliant victory to end a superb season. This was another great all round performance from the team. The young guns Shea McGarrity and Ryan Pickering were brilliant, the old hands Stephen Monaghan and Paul McGurk did a great job in defence and Martin Murray was superb throughout. The focus now switches to the Ulster Club campaign and the team will hope to write another chapter of glory in the 2009 season. The Fr Rocks team took the field as follows; M Rea, R Pickering, S Monaghan, P McGurk, S McGarrity, B Hughes (1-0), C O'Hare (0-1), G Fitzpatrick, C Mullan (0-1), R Mulgrew, B Mulligan (0-1), Brian Mulligan, C Eastwood (0-1), O Mulligan (1-2, 1 free), M Murray (0-1, free). Subs; J Quinn for C Eastwood, B O'Neill for G Fitzpatrick. Ardboe O'Donovan Rossa club notes Pride of place this week undoubtedly goes to the management and players of the under 16 team who claimed the under 16 championship title in O'Neill Park Dungannon, beating a very gallant Loughmacrory side who had only tasted defeat once in 13 games played up until the championship final, having won the league title the week before. Having survived a preliminary round scare against Derrylaughan where it took extra time to separate the sides, the team struck a rich vein of form thereafter accounting for Greeencastle in the quarter final and a strong Eglish team in the semi final, thus progressing to the final to face what was to prove to be a very tough assignment. The team hit the ground running in O'Neill Park and in front of a very large and enthusiastic crowd were determined to end the season on a previously unimaginable high. Exerting early pressure, the young Rossas scored first to take an early lead through Conan Campbell which was soon cancelled out by a Loughmacrory point. Having been awarded an awkward free on the stand side, Olly Coyle hit a long and high shot goal wards which was taken out of the clouds by Conan who under immense pressure from three defenders, intelligently transferred the ball to an equally alert and inrushing Michael Lynn who dispatched an unstoppable shot the net to give us the perfect lift. Loughmacroy however launched attack after attack in the remaining 15 minutes of the first half but the Rossa defence withstood all that Loughmacrory could throw at them and it was only breached once when Loughmacrory got through for only their second point of the entire half. But for some wayward shooting, we could have been further ahead at the half time whistle but the half time whistle sounded with us leading 1-1 to 0-2. On the restart, Loughmacrory gained the upper hand for the first 10 minutes of the half with only Michael Lynn registering on the scoreboard when taking on what seemed like the entire defence to weave his way and taking a memorable point off the outside of his boot. Loughmacrory drew level and the pressure was really on and the game was in the balance for a long period. Ardboe's defence refused to yield and with the teams locked together, a magnificent long range fisted effort to break the deadlock. This spurred his team mates on and gave great encouragement to the team at a very significant part of the game. Soon after a high dropping ball was contested between the Loughmacrory full back and Conan. Possession was gained by Conan who under enormous pressure from the defender, first timed the ball to the back of the net from about 21 yards to effectively settle the tie and put the game beyond Loughmacrory's reach. With Loughmacrory now forced to chase the game, gaps appeared in their defence and Ryan Wilkinson was on hand to charge through the middle and take a fine score. A pointed free left the score at the end 2-5 to 0-5 and the final whistle followed soon thereafter, leading to wild scenes of celebrations. Whilst it was a fantastic team effort on the day, special praise must go the entire defence who managed to hold a very good Loughmacrory team to just 5 scores. Shane Graham was magnificent in goals and the full back line of Peter O'Neill, captain Aidan Duffy and Olly Mallaghan were simply outstanding whilst the half back line of Aaron Coney, Joe Quinn and Johnny Mc Auley were awesome, repelling numerous attacks, turning over possessions and setting up counter attacks all over the field. Midfielders Michael Cassidy and Ryan Wilkinson put in an incredible hour's work in the middle of the field, ensuring that the forwards were fed with a steady supply of ball. Conan, as usual, led the line superbly again and his goal was the turning point. Michael Lynn weighed in with a marvellous 1-1 and Eoin Quinn, Sean Teague, Olly Coyle and Ryan Mulgrew were magnificent. For team that were given no chance at the beginning of the year, this has indeed been a remarkable transformation and great credit and thanks must go to the management team of Benny Hurl, Conor Mc Flynn and Malachy Coyle who have put a lot of time and effort into the team. Enormous credit is also due to the players who have trained hard and got their just rewards on the biggest day of the year - championship final day. The entire panel is asked to assemble at the pavilion on Wednesday evening at 5.45pm sharp. Please bring playing gear.
